31 Days of German Riesling

This summer celebrate Germany’s most beloved grape, Riesling throughout the 31 days in July.

Festivities will take place coast to coast in five major cities across Canada with bespoke programming all spreading the word of the magnificently lively and versatile German Riesling grape.

Canadians from Halifax to Vancouver will have the opportunity to experience German Rieslings as they never had before from unique finds and natural Rieslings at participating independent wine merchants, to select restaurants featuring culinary dishes paired with German wines and virtual tastings with celebrity wine educators.

Celebrate with us by taking part in one of these coast to coast activities:

TORONTO: Visit Participating Restaurants and Wine Bottle Shops Celebrating 31 Days of German Rieslings

“I love stocking German wines. Even though the country has a centuries old winemaking tradition the wines are still underrepresented in the North America, so it’s fun to introduce people to something they maybe wouldn’t think of straight away. Their Pinots (Spatburgunder) are criminally underrated, and German Riesling is certainly among the best white wines in the world. German wines are incredibly food friendly. The Germans figured out long ago that rich and zippy whites are perfect for rich meats, and they have the delicacy to compliment the veg-heavy cuisine that is increasing in popularity.”

PARTICIPATING RESTAURANTS

Crosley's

German Riesling + Food Pairing:

Asparagus, Duck Egg, Guanciale

This wine is classic, Zippy green apple and lemon/lime acidity. Refreshing and punchy, this wine remains persistent across the palate with great texture and length.  This wine pairs beautifully with our green asparagus, duck egg and guanciale dish that will be on the menu for some time. The ripeness of in season asparagus and the fat from the guanciale and duck egg yolk really allow for the fruit and complexity in this wine to show up, with all those flavours, the searing acidity in this wine cleans everything up quite nicely.

German Wine on Offer in July Paired with Food Pairing:

2020 Schloss Lieser Trocken Riesling, Mosel

Address: 214 Ossignton Ave

Skippa

German Riesling + Food Pairing:

Isaki Sashimi  with green asparagus, baby leeks and fresh wasabi.

Lots of barely ripe tropical fruit on the nose, green papaya, melon and lime.  It’s a vibrant and balanced example, possessing a surprising amount of detail for an entry level offering. This wine is an aromatic match for the verdant spring flavours on the plate, and the fresh wasabi is balanced by the hint of RS in the wine. Sashimi requires both texture and acidity, and this wine has a beautiful viscosity and bright finish.

HALIFAX: By the Glass Wine Tasting Group Facebook Live Tasting with Mark DeWolf

“It might come as a surprise to many that Nova Scotia has a rich German heritage. Our South Shore in particular is justly amous for scallops and lobster, but it is also well-known for its sauerkraut and sausages. In a day when connectivity to our local people, places and traditions has never been more important to so many, I’ll happily toast our great local German-inspired foods and Nova Scotia’s German heritage with a glass of German wine in hand. It certainly doesn’t hurt that German Riesling and other German wines pair so well with east coast ingredients.”
